Users should take the measures below to either speed up their Computer or figure out why they are late. It’s worth noting that this page addresses a sluggish machine in general, not one that starts slowly or has weak Internet access.
Restart a Computer
If your machine hasn’t been rebooted in a while, do so before proceeding with either of the measures below. Restarting the computer can fix a lot of problems and is an easy first step.
Computer Programs that run in the background
Programs running in the background are one of the most frequent causes of a sluggish machine. TSRs and initialization programs that start automatically when the device boots can be removed or disabled.
If you have an antivirus scanner, spyware detection software, or other security utility installed on your device, make sure it isn’t searching it in the background. When a scan is running, the computer’s average output suffers. Enable the scan to finish if this is the case, and the computer’s output should increase.
Delete all temporary files.
When a computer runs programmes, temporary data is stored on the hard disc. Getting rid of these temporary files will make the machine run faster.
Computer that run Windows
To begin, we recommend using the Windows Disk Cleanup utility to remove temporary files and other files from the machine that is no longer required.
Unfortunately, the Disk Cleanup program will not be able to uninstall any of the files in the temp directory. As a result, we recommend manually removing temporary data.
-
Click the Windows key to open the Start menu, then type percent temp percent in the Search area.
-
When you press Enter, a Temp folder should appear.
-
You can remove all files in this folder, and you can miss any files that are in service and cannot be removed.
Hard drive room that is available
Check that the hard drive has at least 200-500MB of free space. This unused space helps the swap file to grow in size to make room for temporary files on the disc.
Hard drive that is bad, corrupted, or fragmented
Check for errors on the hard disc.
Run ScanDisk, or something similar on a Windows device to ensure the computer’s hard drive is in good working order.
Access the Disk Utility software on a macOS machine and use the First Aid feature to search the hard drive for errors. To use Disk Utility, follow these steps:
-
On the dock, click the Launchpad button.
-
Go to the Other folder and open it.
-
To start the application, click Disk Utility.
Check to see if the hard disc is fragmented.
Run Defrag to ensure the data is organized in the most efficient manner possible.
Examine the hard disc
Examine the SMART of the hard drive with other technical resources to check for any errors.
Check for viruses.
It’s possible that the machine would operate slower if it’s loaded with one or more viruses. If you don’t have antivirus software built on your pc, use Trend Micro’s free Housecall online service to search and delete viruses. We also suggest that you install antivirus software to provide active virus security.
Check for ransomware.
Spyware and other malware are now a major trigger of a variety of computer issues, including slower efficiency. We suggest running a malware scan even though an antivirus scanner is mounted on the device. Malwarebytes’ free edition can be used to search the device for ransomware.
Hardware clashes
Be sure there are no problems with the System Manager. If any remain, address them as they could be the source of your dilemma.
The operating system should be updated.
Run Windows Upgrade on a device operating Microsoft Windows to keep it up to date.
Run Software Update on a macOS machine to repair it. Using the App Store to update the operating system.
Browser plug-ins can be disabled.
Try removing all browser plug-ins, add-ons, or extensions if your machine is particularly sluggish when using your web browser.
augmentations
Drivers must be updated.
Make sure you have the most up-to-date drivers for your computer hardware, including the video drivers. Drivers that are out of date may trigger a variety of problems, including poor results.
Restart the machine.
Restart your computer after making any of the modifications mentioned above.
Make use of a register cleaner.
Typically, registry cleaners are not recommended. If your machine is still sluggish after following all of the measures above, consider running a registry cleaner on it.
Upgraded memory
RAM (random access memory) is a form of computer memory.
If your machine has been in your possession for more than two years, you will need additional memory. Today, we recommend that computers have at least 2 GB of RAM for 32-bit systems and 4 GB for 64-bit systems. Your machine would not need to swap information saved in memory to the swap file if you have enough memory for programs to operate in memory. If the hard drive light stays on all the time, it means the device is constantly switching data between memory and the hard drive.
Upgrade the Computer hard disc
a solid-state drive (SSD)
The hard disc drive is one of a computer’s most important bottlenecks. The efficiency of a device can be dramatically improved by upgrading from a normal hard drive to a Solid State Drive (SSD).
Overheating Computer or CPU
Check to see if the machine or processor is overheating. Since most operating systems immediately reduce the processor’s speed to better compensate for heat-related problems, excessive heat may trigger a decrease in computer efficiency.
Dust, soil, and hair will even obstruct sufficient ventilation within your screen, resulting in overheating. Check to see if the machine case is clean and if the fans aren’t blocked.
Cpu speed can be increased or upgraded.
A CPU is depicted in this illustration.
The efficiency of your machine can be improved by increasing the processor (CPU) power. Overclocking or updating are the two choices for rising processing power.
Overclocking a processor involves running it at a higher pace than it was programmed to operate at. Although overclocking will boost processor speed, the increase is usually not important, resulting in a speed increase of only 10% to 20% at most. Furthermore, the CPU must have the ability to be overclocked. You’ll need to look up the specs for your computer’s processor to see how it can be overclocked. Since an overclocked processor produces more heat, a more efficient heat sink and fan are needed to remove the excess heat from the processor.
Upgrading the computer’s processor is a better choice for overclocking. To decide what kind of newer processor should be included in your motherboard, you’ll need to get the specs for it. The latest processor will then be installed instead of the old one.
Restart the Computer after wiping it clean.
If neither of the above remedies solves the problems, you should reinstall the operating system or wipe everything and start anew.
Through removing old applications and drivers, erasing everything on your device, and reinstalling the operating system will improve results. Installing a fresh copy of macOS or Windows, as well as security applications and the most recent drivers, will help ensure that your machine is not experiencing any software-related problems.

Computer Hardware problems
Finally, if your machine is still sluggish after following the above suggestions, you might be dealing with a more severe hardware problem (e.g., failing component). The hard disc, CPU, RAM, motherboard, and other elements are examples of failing electronics.
The Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD) utility can be used to operate hardware diagnostic checks. This program can tell you if you have a poor piece of hardware on your machine.
Old machine.
Your machine can run slower than a fresh one if it is more than five years old. More sophisticated software programs are optimized to operate more effectively on newer machines when they are launched. Older machines are unable to execute these modern programs as well as newer computers, resulting in slower performance. Furthermore, modern tech is generally more demanding, which is another issue for outdated hardware. We suggest that you either buy a new machine or upgrade the existing one.
